What's Not to Love?

Capturing the heart and fascination of many a child, Disney's Frozen has grossed over $1.2 billion in theatre sales.  Even if you've never sat down and watched the movie from start to finish, you've probably inadvertently heard its hit tunes, "Let It Go" or "Do You Wanna Build a Snowman?"  And, if you're the parent of a youngster, or, a school teacher like me, you may have also inadvertently learned all the lyrics.

So, what has made Frozen so wildly popular?  Its hit Broadway tunes?  The ditzy, yet beloved snowman character, Olaf?  The story line of a destructive ice queen (Elsa) who, through love, learns to control her powers?

While all of these aspects do make the film charmingly entertaining, there is another, perhaps less popular facet of Frozen that I really, really, really appreciate.

That is Frozen's portrayal of sisterhood.

While the tale begins with a sprightly pair of inseparable sister princesses (Elsa and Anna) romping in magical snow creations, their relationship becomes conflicted after Elsa's power proves dangerous.  Just when their relationship seems beyond repair and the two sisters are on the brink of death, it is the sacrificial love of Anna for Elsa that rescues them both.

Subsequently, I can't help but be reminded of my very COOL sister, Val, especially on this day, her birthday.

As Floridians, she and I didn't build many snowmen together, and while Val is royally awesome, we didn't exactly grow up chasing each other down castle corridors.

What I can tell you about Val is this.  She has a unique gift for caring for people.  She'll share a smile or give underserved patience to every friend, stranger, or foe (although she knows not one).

She is courageous and works off her tail to follow her dreams, a thing she encourages and empowers others to do too.

Of course, she's goofy, or we wouldn't be related.  Her sense of humor makes others laugh and makes her genuinely down to earth.  She makes others feel comfortable and valued.

A follower of Christ, Val shows much love in the relationships He provides and that she fosters.

Yes, what a gift she has... and what a gift she is.

I'm so grateful... and proud to not just call her my sister, but also my friend.

So, I'll conclude with this analogy: Valorie is to me, as summer is to Olaf.

She makes me want to joyfully sing at the top of my lungs.

She's my beach paradise on the perfect sunny day.

And finally, when we're apart like we are now, I daydream of spending time in her presence.

While I'm not saying she's gonna turn me into an evaporating puddle, she is definitely worth melting for.

Happy Birthday, Dearest Valorie!  I love you.
